history of witham field

Today, Witham Field with its three runways, serves most of the general aviation needs for Martin County and surrounding areas. The airport, just a few miles southeast of the City of Stuart, can accommodate most general aviation aircraft including smaller business jets, and is home to more than 200 private and business aircraft. It also plays host to the largest community event on the Treasure Coast, the annual Stuart Air Show. The airports fixed-based-operators (FBO’s) act as the local terminals for all its users and those visiting Martin County from other locales.

The history of Witham Field is emblematic of the people and County in which it resides. Its very beginning is deeply rooted in duty, patriotism and generosity from the residents of Martin County. As with many rural airports in the 30’s, Martin County Airport was just a grass landing strip. But with the rumblings of war overseas in the 40’s, a group of visionary and patriotic private landowners convened and offered their property to the county, to serve their county.
